Summer Camp

One week can transform your life.

High school and junior high groups come from all over the United States for one week to partner with us as we connect you with homeowners in need of critical home repair in under-resourced neighborhoods of Memphis, TN.

We hope to instill a heart for gospel-driven service and mission as youth serve others in the name of Christ. As an expression of Christ’s love, SOS seeks to empower persons and transform neighborhoods by utilizing volunteers to renovate homes of economically disadvantaged homeowners.

How do I register?

SOS offers convenient online credit card registration for participants. Registration opens on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 10:00 AM CST. Groups can also register for camp with a check by filling out a printable application (currently being updated). Make sure to specify the camp (SOS or SOS114) and the session you or your group wishes to attend. Dates for participants are assigned on a first come, first served basis.

Where Do We Stay?

For SOS in Binghampton, your group will eat, sleep, shower, and worship, at the SOS Building located at 2505 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38112. For SOS114 in Orange Mound, your group will eat, sleep, shower, and worship, at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, 1362 South Prescott St., Memphis, TN 38111.

Who Supervises the Participants?

SOS will notify you of the number of work teams your group will be divided into. Each work team will consist of approximately 6 students and 1 adult volunteer (age 21 years or older) from your group. An SOS staff person will also work with each team. Your adult leaders will provide evening supervision, including during lights out. Our full-time staff and college summer staff will provide programming, home, and additional evening supervision.

What Do We Bring?

Each group is responsible for their own transportation. Each volunteer needs to bring bedding (sleeping bag or twin sheets), pillow, work clothes, work gloves, water bottle, and personal items. As for tools and building materials, SOS will provide everything your group will need. Therefore, you do not need to bring any of your own tools. A complete list of what to bring will be emailed to you after your registration is received.

When Do We Arrive and Leave?

Our camps begin on Sunday and end on Saturday morning. Groups arrive at SOS between 3:00-4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. Groups leave by 9:00am on Saturday morning.

What Do We Do at Night?

SOS exists to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed through urban home repair camps. Each evening there will be a program that is filled with worship, fun, and a Christ-centered message. We want each participant to hear a call to love and serve our risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Each Wednesday afternoon and evening your group is free to enjoy our city (dinner will not be provided by SOS on Wednesday night).

Who are the summer staff?

SOS hires approximately 60 college age men and women from around the country to serve as camp staff in Binghampton and Orange Mound. You can learn more about summer staff and how to apply here.
