SOS Family Album: Nathalie Rowell

Gather ‘round, SOS family! We’re pulling out a few pages of the family photo album.

We love good stories. And old pictures. And timeless lessons and encouragements and reasons for hope. Who better to share all of those things than some of the SOS alumni family?

Again and again, when staff applications roll in there are a stack of them that come in AS.SOON.AS.APPLICATIONS.OPEN. and are from had-been campers who had been led and loved well by SOS Summer Staff and are eager and ready for a chance at wearing those staff shirts themselves. They often know as much about the ins-and-outs of SOS as those of us on the other side of the interviews! We have been changed and challenged (for the good!) by those campers who become staffers. They have a beautiful and almost-impossibly high regard for the work and ways of SOS and they help us fight to keep it that way.

One such camper turned staffer?…

Nathalie Rowell

Camper, SOS Summer Staff ‘18 & ‘19

What are some favorite SOS moments/memories?

Wednesday nights watching the Bachelorette, finishing the first roof, Gibson’s runs, move-in day!

What did you learn through your years and experiences at SOS?

SOS taught me that service isn’t bending down to people or pulling them up, but rather it’s coming along beside people and meeting them exactly where they are.

Memphis Favorites:

Global Cafe, Brooks Art Museum, Tenn Tea

How did your time at SOS impact you?

SOS changed my life by exposing me to people from so many different walks of life. I also fell in love with Memphis through SOS, and hope to make the move after completing my education.

What does your life look like these days?

I’m currently finishing my last semester of undergrad in social work. From there I hope to obtain my license and my masters and begin working with women and children in underprivileged situations.

What’s your prayer for the SOS family?

I pray that service will remain at the heart of SOS, and that it will be able to mold and move with the people of Memphis.
