Alumni Testimony: Rachel Stobbe

Over the next few weeks, you'll get to hear testimonies from a few of our college summer staff! We're eager to share these stories!

Hello! My name is Rachel Stobbe and I had the amazing opportunity to work at Service Over Self this summer as a team leader. SOS is an amazing place to spend your summer. The community of the homeowner partners, campers, staff and volunteers that surrounds SOS is something completely incomparable to anything else I have ever experienced. My first summer as a camper at SOS was in 2012, and I have yet to make it through a summer without spending at least one week in the 901.

Being on staff teaches you a multitude of things. I was a team leader so that meant my day to day life looked like a lot of sunscreen, shingles, and sweating it out with some phenomenal campers and adult leaders. I could go on forever about the incredible relationships I cultivated with the amazing people that helped out at 3106 Given. That roof kept testing me, and my construction managers patience, with a new problem each week, but through the help of everyone that was there we finished. If you are reading this and you graced that roof with your sweat and hard work, thank you so much.

Being a team leader is one of the hardest jobs I have ever had, but by far the most rewarding. While I was up on a roof in the middle of a Memphis summer, I was laughing harder than I ever have, experiencing God's love in ways I never had, and making memories I will never forget. Where there days that I wanted to throw in the towel. However, the days when I got see campers, adult leaders, or homeowner partners really grasp God's love for them or truly understand what it means to serve your neighbor means made it completely worth it. The Lord changes people while they are at SOS, my self included and I am so thankful for it.
