SOS’s Transition 

As we wrap up our 40th summer and move into our fall programming, we wanted to share an update regarding SOS’s year-round leadership and staffing.

September 18 was Michael Simants’ final day as Executive Director of SOS. The Board is grateful for the two years God called Michael to serve at SOS and for the time, energy, and care that he and his family have poured into this organization. We are thankful for his leadership and wish Michael and his family all the best in this next season of their ministry. We know they will continue to embody “Welcome Home” in all their future endeavors.

We know you may have questions about what this transition means for SOS, so we have provided answers to what we feel will be a few of the most common questions below.

So, what’s next for SOS’s leadership?

The Board is in the process of identifying and appointing an Interim Director for SOS. In the meantime, Laura Haltom has also agreed to step into the interim role of Chief Operating Officer and will help oversee the day-to-day operations of SOS while the organization moves through this transition.

When will a new Executive Director be appointed?

The Board plans to take intentional time to discern the leadership needs of SOS’s future before beginning a search for a new Executive Director. The Board does not anticipate posting the position until summer 2027.

In the meantime, our year-round staff are highly capable and deeply committed to SOS and its mission. We remain focused on providing excellent programming for our Builds students and creating meaningful camp experiences for our church partners and campers in 2027.

Will this affect SOS’s programs, funding, or church partnerships?

Our current year-round staff remain committed to SOS, and our day-to-day operations and programs will continue moving forward. We are grateful for the continued support of our donors, church partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders as we enter this next season.
