SOS Family Album: Everett Kalman

Gather ‘round, SOS family! We’re pulling out a few pages of the family photo album.

We love good stories. And old pictures. And timeless lessons and encouragements and reasons for hope. Who better to share all of those things than some of the SOS alumni family?

Sundays are always a special day during summers at SOS! The full-time and summer staff spend the afternoon in the parking lot watching traffic for the new week’s campers to roll in and then we swell into the wildest, campiest version of Memphis hospitality and welcome our guests.

There’s one group that has really kept us on our toes on those Sunday afternoons the last few years! They roll in with 3-4 deluxe motorcoaches (sometimes with AC, sometimes not) and we go to work! So many to welcome all at once and we love it. It’s our beloved Northview, a campus-based church network from Indiana.

Their dear love of SOS has resulted in years of really important partnership and has been for our great good…especially when it comes to hiring their students as summer staffers! One such Northview student turned staffer? The one, the only…

Everett Kalman

SOS Camper ‘14 - ‘16 & SOS Summer Staff ‘18 and ‘19

What did you learn through your years and experiences at SOS?

What an active church looks like engaged in its community, how to be a leader, that there are more ways of reading and interpreting scripture than what I’d learned growing up.

Memphis Favorites:

ugly mug coffee, la mich, central bbq, Christ city church

How did your time at SOS impact you?

it revived a passion in my faith and gave me hope instead of fear when I read the Bible.

What does your life look like these days?

Finishing college and starting to apply to law schools (including U Memphis)! Also, I’ve been reading some of Pete Enns’ books on the Bible and how to wrestle with and engage with scripture which has been really helpful, eye-opening, and encouraging.

What’s your prayer for the SOS family?

the continuing pursuit of justice in Memphis, the continued growth of myself and the people I worked with .
