SOS Family Album: Carter Mackie

Gather ‘round, SOS family! We’re pulling out a few pages of the family photo album.

We love good stories. And old pictures. And timeless lessons and encouragements and reasons for hope. Who better to share all of those things than some of the SOS alumni family?

When we think about people who we’ve seen grow up at SOS, this guy is sure to come to mind. We first knew him as the North Carolina camper kid that somehow came with the Dexter crew from Michigan. And then we got so used to seeing him show up, we stopped asking questions and we were just happy to have him back at SOS again.

And if there’s a way to summarize his tenure at SOS it may be said just like that, “we were just happy to have him back at SOS again.” Notorious for just showing up in Memphis, despite living and going to school hundreds of miles away, this guy is loyalty in skin…and gave us every one of his college summers, most of his Spring Breaks, and made the move to Memphis and back to SOS again as soon as he graduated from college.

What did you learn through your years and experiences at SOS?

SOS was a great place for me to learn self-assurance. I was given jobs and tasks that I did not have the skills to take on, but with that I was also given knowledge and support from those above me. It is important for young people to have a place to be able to mess up while also being encouraged and taught how to do things correctly. I see the allegory in that of God charging us to share the gospel, even though we do not perfectly know the Bible and might not have the right answers every time.

Memphis Favorites:

Tacos nganas, golf and games, Burke’s book store

How did your time at SOS impact you?

In 2016, I was coming to SOS straight from my first year at college feeling spiritually deficient and seeking more. God used His people at SOS to show that love is not contingent on merit, especially His. I hold that summer in high regard as the best stint of time I have ever had there. Needless to say, the other years were good too!

What does your life look like these days?

I currently work as the Property Manager of the Binghampton Development Corporation. A job I accepted after working there as an intern during my academy year.

What’s your prayer for the SOS family?

I pray resilience over the sos family! I pray the Lord would protect us and galvanize us into action with our work and ministries.
