Jesus: Our True Salvation

Jesus is in the business of giving new life. That's what I love about the work we do. When we make critical home repairs for homeowners in our partner communities, we are bringing new life to those homes. We are taking away the old and putting on the new.

Many people might look at our work and think it's not worth it. It takes a lot of time, money, and energy to provide critical home repairs with volunteers for nearly 40 homeowners every year. And many of the houses we repair are in pretty rough shape before we begin. Some people might even pity us...feeling like our work is wasteful or not going to solve any problems.

But many people also looked upon the life of Jesus and his early followers and pitied them too. In fact, Paul reminds us that were it not for the resurrection, we of all people are to be most pitied (1 Corinthians 15:19). It is because Jesus was raised from the dead - to new life - that we have hope beyond this life. If Jesus was not raised from the dead, then we have no hope. That's what we celebrate during this Easter season - the hope that we have of eternal life with our glorious and loving God because of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

And that is our motivation. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, it is worth all the hard work and sweat and time and energy to demonstrate that love to the world through providing home repair. It allows us a tangible way to show others of the new life of which we speak. And it allows many homeowners in our community to taste a little bit of the hope that is offered in Christ. Our home repairs do not bring salvation to anyone. But they are a step towards setting right some of the broken things in this world. And our hope and prayer is that through that we are painting a dim picture of the hope that comes through trusting in Jesus.
