2012 Golf Tournament Recap

The 10th Annual Service Over Self Mike Myatt Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Saturday September 22nd, at the Links at Galloway.  This event is one that was dreamed of by Mike Myatt to work as a substantial fundraiser for SOS.  Mike passed shortly before the first tournament was held.  SOS Board Member Chuck Carter has taken the lead over this annual event and seen it through to uphold Mike's wish. SOS invited homeowners from the past 3 summers to a BBQ lunch at SOS beforehand and to participate in a round of golf as part of the tournament.  A friend of SOS, Melvin "Too Tall" Moore, blessed the tournament participants with ribs, chicken, pork, beans and slaw.  There was a BBQ judge among the golfers who gave Too Tall's ribs rave reviews.   Door prizes were given away to some lucky individuals: golf clubs, an Erling Jensen gift card, SOS memorabilia, and other goodies.

Golfers were shown an SOS video to learn about Empowering Persons & Transforming Neighborhoods, the vision of SOS.

After lunch, 19 teams of 4 showed up at Galloway for a scramble.  The weather was prime and the spirits high after being blessed by wonderful Memphian BBQ.  The shotgun start ensued the tournament and fun was had by all!

For the SOS staff, one of the brightest spots of the day was not the dollar signs that the tournament represented, but rather the delight in seeing a homeowner participate with one of the teams.  SOS partnered with Mr. Isaiah Joiner to repair his home in 2011.  A full year later he still has a love for the work SOS is doing in the neighborhood.

Mr. Joiner is 83 years "young," and his new golfing buddies said that he carried them all day long!

Here are a few pictures of Mr. Joiner enjoying his new friends and his day golfing.
